Analyt-IQ powered by DIRECT ACTIVITY LLC was born in early 2020. The team formed by former engineering colleagues, mechanical, electrical and thermical, who have worked together for more than 20 years working for the ANGELANTONI group. ANGELANTONI is one of today’s leading companies in the R&D and production of testing equipment. Their ACS brand includes a comprehensive range of environmental test chambers and operating in the field of renewable energies and energy efficiency.

TurboAlgor ®   is the “ultimate” solution to improve energy efficiency for both old and new compression refrigeration systems by transferring a highly effective technology from the automotive industry to enhance energy recovery from heat exchangers. For this purpose, TurboAlgor ®   aims at the adaptation of a turbocharger similar to those used in the automotive industry, to a refrigeration system.

TurboAlgor ®   is a disruptive energy saving technology innovation that makes a radical break with every existing energy saving solution: thanks to its superior performance, it can replace either INVERTER or ECONOMISER technology applied to the cold chain.

By assembling a TURBOALGOR Kit on a vapour-compressor refrigeration system, energy saving is increased by up to 23% and cooling capacity is enhanced by up to 56% in the best case, while in the worst case the benefits’ percentages cut-down up to 7% and 9% for energy saving and cooling capacity improvement respectively.

01 / CONCEPT

02 / MAIN COMPONENTS

TurboAlgor ®   technology is based on the introduction, into a standard chiller cycle, of some additional components assembled together into the TurboAlgor ®   KIT: the turbocharger and the heat exchangers.

03 / DESCRIPTION

While the heat exchangers are quite conventional, the turbochargers has been specifically developed and optimized by TurboAlgor ®   in order to guarantee the maximum efficiency and a reliable and durable operation.

TurboAlgor ®  technology is available in two different level of integration with the traditional refrigeration system:

TurboAlgor ®  stand alone kit and the TurboAlgor ®  integrated system.

 

TurboAlgor ® STAND ALONE KIT

The TurboAlgor ®  Stand Alone Kit is a preassembled factory unit, to be selected based on operating temperatures and required power, which easily integrates with the existing refrigeration system.

The following Figure 1 shows how the TurboAlgor ® Stand Alone Kit looks like.

For this option, it is worth estimating the TurboAlgor ® Stand Alone Kit size impact on a conventional refrigeration plant. As can be seen in Figure 2, the TurboAlgor ® Stand Alone Kit is fairly small and thus has almost no impact on the general appearance of the refrigeration system.

TurboAlgor ®  INTEGRATED SYSTEM

The turbocharger, the heat exchangers and the lubrication system are integrated into the refrigeration system. With this solution, commissioning and overall dimensions are simplified.

APPLICATIONS

Although TurboAlgor ®  technology is suitable for a wide range of applications, from low temperature to industrial air conditioning systems as well as for different refrigerant fluids, the highest performance occurs in the cluster of low and medium temperatures (LT and MT respectively) using synthetic refrigerant fluid.

The cooling capacity, required for the refrigeration system to be able to accomplish that wide range of applications, goes from some dozens to hundreds of kilowatts (kW). TurboAlgor ®  targets refrigeration plants whose cooling capacity range falls between 20 kW and 300 kW. Outside that specific range, for refrigeration plants with a cooling capacity lower than 20 kW, TurboAlgor ®   investment costs may exceed the financial benefits from a customer perspective. Alternatively, for refrigeration units with a cooling capacity higher than 300 kW, the achievable critical mass1 may not be sufficiently appealing to justify marketing efforts from a supplier perspective.

In conclusion, although TurboAlgor ® is most suitable for LT and MT applications using R404A and any other type of Freon gases (such as R449A whose GWP is lower than 2500) with a cooling capacity range between 20 kW and 300 kW regardless of the compressor type (Scroll, Screw and Piston), further developments to the project will affect the following areas:

REFRIGERANTS  

New fluids will be tested according to “fluid evolution” as required by the EU, which aims at the substitution of current organic refrigerants such as HFC (R404A, R410A or R134A) with other low GWP2 HFC blends, as well as with inorganic refrigerants (such as ammonia or CO2).

COOLING CAPACITY RANGE 
Both below (<) 20 kW and above (>) 300 kW will be investigated to be able to include industrial sectors otherwise not perfectly suitable for TurboAlgor ®.

EVAPORATING AND OPERATING TEMPERATURE
Air conditioning applications are being tested to allow the adoption of TurboAlgor ® -efficient and effective technology.

1) The refrigerant units number is an “inverse” function of the cooling capacity thus, the bigger the cooling capacity, the lower the number of refrigerant units.
2) GWP = Global Warming Potential
